Can’t I use a VoIP Gateway?

Yes, VoIP Gateways can be used to build Voice VPNs

Cisco Systems are a major supplier of VoIP Gateways amongst many others. However there are some draw-backs with VoIP Gateways:

· VoIP gateways would require dedicated trunks to be installed and configured in the legacy PBX—this is often a hidden cost

· VoIP Gateways are often more costly and require expensive DSP resources to support IP channels

· Dial plan changes require complex configuration changes to each VoIP Gateway or use of a central call control

· Call Control servers e.g. SIP Proxy or H.323. Gatekeepers add complexity and cost and are a single point of failure

· DSP upgrades require hardware installation and therefore site visits

In contrast, a Voice Router has it’s own intelligence and in most cases wont require DSP upgrades .

More importantly, however, using a Voice Router means that your PBX does not require dedicated trunks to be installed and configured.
