What is a Voice Router? |
|
A Voice Router is a voice network routing device which can intelligently route telephone calls between IP-based sub-systems and TDM-based sub-systems. For example a Voice Router can typically inter-connect (i) a customers site PBX (ii) PSTN network services e.g. Primary Rate Interface (iii) an IP-network using signally protocols such as H.323 or SIP. A number of Voice Routers can be inter-connected over a data VPN to provide a Voice VPN. Voice Routers have the benefit that the corporate voice dial plan is managed in the Voice Router itself rather than a central call control such as a H.323 Gatekeeper which inherently rely on high-availability platforms adding cost to the service. With Voice Routers only the VPN dial plan is managed centrally. In the unlikely event of a Voice Router failure all calls can still routed via the public network PSTN and so do not affect existing PSTN voice services. Voice Routers also have the benefit of being software upgraded to support more (or less) concurrent Voice VPN calls (unlike most VoIP/IOS gateways which have expensive hardware DSP resources to provide). In theory, a site could start with a single voice channel and be progressively upgraded right up to 120 channels in a single Voice Router box. Indeed the Voice Router concept works equally well for head-office to distribution centre businesses where there are potentially hundreds of local distribution centers with only a single or few voice circuits each. |
